in memory of Kalle Päätalo

Kalle Päätalo (1919-2000), was a much loved Finnish author whose books depict life in a remote part of north-eastern Finland, Koillismaa. The memorial sculpture consists of two parts: A 3m high book made out of cor-ten steel, set at one end of the triangular central square, and 13 'pages' forming an abstract landscape at the wider edge of the square. Figures of local people taken from historical photographs are cut into the cor-ten steel pages and the figure of Kalle Päätalo himself is cut into the cover of the book. The sculpture is located in Taivalkoski, Finland.

Awarded by the Finnish Environmental Art Foundation, 2006.
